Getting Started

What's the first step in producing a commercial?

Start with a strategy session. We'll discuss your goals, target audience, budget range, timeline, and creative vision. From there, we develop a proposal that includes creative approach, production plan, and detailed budget — all before you commit to anything. The most common mistake is jumping straight to production without defining what success looks like. Our first conversation ensures we're building toward measurable outcomes, not just making a pretty video.

How far in advance should I plan my video production?

For a standard commercial production: 4-6 weeks minimum from kickoff to final delivery. Rush timelines (2-3 weeks) are possible but limit creative options and cost more due to expedited crew booking, equipment sourcing, and post-production rush fees. For complex productions (multiple locations, VFX, national broadcast): 8-12 weeks. For brand films and mini-documentaries: 6-10 weeks. The more time you give pre-production, the better the final product — every hour of planning saves three in production and ten in post.

Do you work with advertising agencies, or directly with brands?

Both. About half our work comes through agencies (we're the production partner executing the agency's creative vision) and half comes directly from brands (we provide both creative development and production). When working with agencies, we're collaborative execution partners — bringing production expertise to the agency's creative. When working directly with brands, we provide full-service creative development through final delivery. Both models work well; it depends on whether you already have an agency relationship.

Production Process

How long does it take to shoot a :30 commercial?

A typical :30 commercial shoots in 1-2 production days. A single day can handle 1-2 locations, 8-12 setups, and a small cast. Two days are needed for multiple locations, larger casts, stunt/VFX work, or extensive product photography. A 10-hour production day typically yields 1-2 minutes of finished content. The ratio sounds extreme but reflects the reality: every setup requires lighting (30-90 min), blocking/rehearsal (15-30 min), and multiple takes. The footage-to-finished ratio is even more extreme in post — a :30 spot may be cut from 2-4 hours of raw footage.

Will my commercial look as good as what I see on TV?

Yes — and it should, because we use the same equipment, crews, and post-production facilities as national broadcast commercials. The difference between your commercial and a Super Bowl spot isn't production quality — it's budget (which buys more production days, bigger sets, celebrity talent, and extensive VFX). Within any budget level, we deliver the highest production value possible. Your commercial, corporate video, or brand film will look like it belongs on whatever screen it's playing on — TV, web, social, or cinema.

What happens if it rains on our outdoor shoot day?

Weather contingencies are built into every outdoor production plan. Options: (1) Covered outdoor alternatives (tents/awnings that still use natural light), (2) Indoor backup locations pre-scouted and permitted, (3) Schedule flexibility — we build weather days into multi-day shoots. For single-day shoots, we monitor weather obsessively in the week leading up and make the call 24-48 hours out whether to proceed or reschedule. Crew and talent are paid for weather days — this is what the contingency budget is for.

How many revisions do I get in post-production?

Our standard process includes three rounds of client revisions: (1) Rough cut review — big-picture feedback on structure, pacing, and story. (2) Fine cut review — detailed feedback on specific shots, transitions, and timing. (3) Picture lock review — final approval before color grade and sound mix. Additional revision rounds are possible but extend the schedule and may affect the budget. The key to efficient post: give comprehensive feedback at each round rather than dribbling it out over multiple emails. Batch your notes; don't send them one at a time.

Budget & Value

Why is professional video production so expensive?

Professional production isn't expensive relative to what it delivers — a well-produced commercial can generate millions in revenue. The cost comes from: (1) Skilled labor — a professional crew of 10-30 specialists, each with years of experience, working 10-12 hour days. (2) Equipment — cinema cameras, professional lighting, grip, and audio gear that costs $100,000-$500,000+ to own (or $5,000-$15,000/day to rent). (3) Time — a :30 commercial represents 4-8 weeks of work across pre-production, production, and post-production by a team of professionals. (4) Insurance, permits, locations, talent, music — all the supporting elements that make production possible. When you break down the cost per viewer or per dollar of revenue generated, professional video is often the most cost-effective marketing investment available.

Can I produce a commercial for under $10,000?

Yes — with the right expectations. A sub-$10,000 production typically means: 1 camera, 1-2 crew members, 1 location, limited lighting and audio, no professional talent (interview-style or voiceover), and efficient post-production with stock music. This can work well for testimonial videos, simple product demos, social content, and internal communications. What it won't deliver: multi-location shoots, professional actors, complex lighting setups, extensive art direction, custom music, or the visual polish of a $50K+ production. We're transparent about what each budget level delivers — we'd rather tell you honestly that your budget doesn't support your creative vision than take the job and deliver something that disappoints everyone.

What's the ROI on professional video production?

ROI varies by project type and distribution, but industry benchmarks: Product demo videos on landing pages — 86% increase in conversion rates. Personalized video in sales outreach — 3-5x response rate improvement. TV advertising — typical ROAS (return on ad spend) of 2:1 to 5:1 for direct response, plus brand lift. B2B video content — 3-5x pipeline influence (video-assisted deals close larger and faster). YouTube/social campaigns — $2-4 revenue per $1 ad spend for well-optimized campaigns. The key variable isn't production quality — it's distribution strategy. A $25,000 video with a $100,000 media budget will generate more measurable ROI than a $100,000 video with no media behind it. Production creates the asset; distribution creates the return.

Working With Us

Where are you based, and do you travel for productions?

We're based in the United States and produce nationwide. We travel wherever the production requires — we've shot in all 50 states and internationally. Travel costs (crew transportation, lodging, per diem, equipment shipping) are built into the production budget. For out-of-state clients, we handle all local production logistics — you don't need to be in the same city as the production company. Many of our clients never visit the set; they review remotely via live monitor feeds and approve dailies from their office.

How do I know if Joe Ciminera Studios is the right production company for my project?

We're the right fit if you value: (1) Production quality that matches or exceeds what you see on national TV, (2) A strategic partner who understands marketing objectives, not just a vendor who executes a shot list, (3) Transparent budgeting with no hidden costs or surprise change orders, (4) Experience across industries — we've produced for medical, technology, consumer products, hospitality, and more. We're not the right fit if you're looking for the lowest possible bidder regardless of quality, or if you need a production company to execute without creative collaboration. The best way to know: schedule a strategy session. A 30-minute conversation tells you more about fit than any website copy.

Do you handle the entire process from concept to final delivery?

Yes. We're a full-service production company. This includes: creative concept development, scriptwriting, storyboarding, casting, location scouting, production, direction, cinematography, sound, editing, color grading, sound design/mix, motion graphics, VFX, music licensing/original composition, and final delivery in all required formats. If you need media buying and campaign distribution, we provide that too. The only thing we don't handle is concept-to-screen in one seamless process — and that's what our clients value most. One team, one vision, one point of accountability.
